Recommended Reading: Shopgirl

Steve Martin's Shopgirl tells the story of young, lonely and usually broke Mirabelle Butterfield, an artist who sells gloves (which nobody ever buys) at the Beverly Hills Neiman Marcus. Mirabelle is looking for love--or at least romance and companionship--with middle-aged Ray Porter, a womanizing Seattle millionaire who may, or may not, have hidden redeeming qualities. It's a disarming and quiet story about the fragile connections in modern life.
